Shrek: The Musical Review

Shrek is one of the most successful animated franchises to come out of the last decade, and so of course the logical next step was to turn it into a musical, right? The result is a fun show that manages to be more enjoyable than the last two movies, but still not something that you have to rush out and see.

One thing that is disappointing about Shrek: The Musical is that essentially its a retelling of the first movie. Now there are some things that give it originality such as the songs themselves which were all written for the show, and some completely original scenes which give an extra insight into the main characters, particularly Lord Farquaad and Shrek himself. But this doesn't change the fact that - assuming you've seen the first Shrek film (which you probably have if your thinking of going to the musical) - you know exactly how everything's going to have gone when the curtain drops.

But let's not be too negative. As I said before there are things that give this show originality, most obvious of which is the fact that it's a musical! The songs vary from OK to great but they're all easy to listen to, with some catchier than others and most filled with funny moments as well. And it's worth saying that, like the early films, there are jokes in this musical for both adults and children which was a relief. The writers knew that adults would be coming to the show with their children and so catered for them too which was a smart move. But then again, moving back to my first point there are some chunks of script that are quite literally lifted straight out of the first movie, which I wasn't expecting to see.

But overall, this doesn't stop the show from being entertaining. The cast were enthusiastic and full of singing talent, and I suppose if your going to recycle a plot it may as well be from one of the most-loved animated films of the last few years! It just seemed like a missed opportunity to tell a truly original tale in the Shrek universe.

Now, I didn't want to talk about the cast too much in this review as in a stage show roles can often switch or be filled in by other talent, but I feel I should say something as the lead cast of Shrek: The Musical really did give great performances. As I said before, the cast were all very enthusiastic putting all their effort into giving the best performances possible. All four of the main cast (Shrek, Fiona, Donkey, Farquaad) sang well and had a great chemistry with each other on stage. I felt that some of the supporting roles didn't hold up quite as well, with both Pinocchio and the Gingerbread Man not singing so much as squeaking their words out -- I know this is a trait for their characters but it still affected how good or even understandable their performances could be.

One member of the cast who really should be applauded though is a certain loveable dragon, portrayed with a magnificent puppet on stage that is handled brilliantly. Yes, you can see the men/women in black skin tight suits pulling the dragon around, but somehow the puppet was still very believable. It really is one of the big triumphs Shrek: The Musical has in bringing the magic of the movies to the stage.

E3 2012: Dance Central 3? Why!!!

OK, we've had enough. Like Guitar Hero, and all the crazes that came before, this is getting pointless. Dance Central 3 is coming to Kinect to make you look like an idiot again. Alright, that was harsh. The Dance Central games are good for what they are. You can have a laugh at a party with them, but they're coming and going every year and not a whole lot is changing.

And the performance from Usher? Please.

Harmonix are smart people, I wish they'd come up with something new.

Anyway, Dance Central 3 is coming out this Fall, and will feature dance moves from different decades...

E3 2012: XBOX Music

At their conference, Miscrosoft announced a new service titled XBOX Music. A very customizable music service coming to XBOX 360, Windows 8, and Windows Phones.

From the video shown, you can assume that XBOX Music will encourage the social aspect of sharing music - in a sense setting up a musical social network with you and your XBOX Live friends.

There also seems to be some form of connectivity for those who have XBOX's and Windows Phone's.

Evanescence (Deluxe Edition) - By Evanescence (2011)

I'm a big fan of Evanescence and have been for a little while now. When I first listened to their new album - simply titled "Evanescence" - I thought it didn't compare to their older work. However, the more I listened to it, the more it grew on me and now I think it's some of their best work yet!

The album carries the same hybrid of rock and classical instruments that the band have always had (despite the several line-up changes). Amy Lee is just as good as she always has been as the band's lead singer, and the rest of the group all prove their worth through some fantastic drum and guitar solos.

But it's not all good. As per usual with Evanescence there are a few dud tracks. Most notable are "Swimming Home" which seems to lack the entire band's presence (with the exception of Amy). While this has proved to be a winning formula before with songs such as "My Immortal" this time it really doesn't work, and makes "Swimming Home" just very boring to listen to.

The only other track I had a problem with was "Secret Door" - one of the four bonus tracks you get with the deluxe edition. It suffers a similar problem to "Swimming Home" in that both the lyrics and rhythm fail to grab your attention.

Those two tracks aside though, Evanescence really is a great album. With the exception of the aforementioned two, all the songs are fantastic to listen to, and feature some great lyrics - and also some quite meaningful ones.
Highlights of the album are "Made of Stone", "Lost In Paradise", "Oceans", and "Say You Will."

The fact that they wrote these songs themselves is great too, as that feature is becoming increasingly difficult to find in music acts.

The deluxe edition also comes with a behind-the-scenes DVD featuring the video to "What You Want," the first single of the new album as well as many interviews with the band. While this is a nice touch, it's not a reason to splash out for the deluxe edition. Although the 3 bonus tracks (not including Secret Door) are of high quality - but still the deluxe edition may be a fan-only thing.

So all in all, apart from a couple of poor songs, this album is definitely one worth adding to your collection. If you liked any of Evanescence's previous work, or want to start listening to them, there's no better entry point than here. With some meaningful and catchy songs this album is unmissable.

If you still think a robot boxing film is a ridiculous idea then think again as Real Steel comes in at No. 1 and with $27.3 million it gets the title highest boxing movie debut ever, beating Rocky IV's previous record of $20 million. It's also the second-highest opening for a sports drama, just behind The Blind Side with $34.1 million.
Other new entry, The Ides of March comes in at No. 2, (though with quite a gap between Real Steel), with just $10.5 million.
Last week's No. 1, Dolphin Tale, falls to No. 3.
And we'd just like to note that while it may be at No. 7 now, The Lion King re-release has raked in a huge $86 million in the US alone. And with a strong UK debut it looks to be one of the highest grossing films of the year.

1. Real Steel - $27.3 million
2. The Ides of March - $10.5 million
3. Dolphin Tale - $9.13 million
4. Moneyball - $7.45 million

9. What's Your Number - $3.13 million
10. Contagion - $2.94 million

 UK Best-Selling Videogames Top 10 (All-Formats/All-Prices):

We have to admit we were surprised to see FIFA 12 keep the top spot, despite highly anticipated shooter Rage coming out - but nevertheless that's what happened.
We were also surprised to see punishing action title Dark Souls have such a high entry, especially after we featured it in the post we called "13 Games that won't Sell this Christmas." Is it possible that we were wrong!?
Resistance 3 also climbs back into the top 10 after being at No. 13 last week.
Honorable mention goes to NBA 2K12 which misses the top 10, but comes in at No. 12.

1. (1) FIFA 12
2. (-) Rage
3. (-) Dark Souls
4. (2) Gears of War 3
5. (3) F1 2011
6. (4) Zumba Fitness
7. (5) Dead Island
8. (6) Deus Ex: Human Revolution
9. (9) Lego Pirates of the Carribean
10. (13) Resistance 3

UK Best-Selling Music Singles:

Rihanna's team-up with Calvin Harris comes straight in at No. 1, knocking last weeks No. 1, "Loca People" by Sak Noel down 2 to No. 3.
LMFAO's "Sexy And I Know It" also climbs 13 places to enter the top 10 at No. 7.

1. Rihanna - We Found Love (feat. Calvin Harris)

So those our the figures for this week. Comment your thoughts and we'll see you next week!
